Legislation forms apprenticeship program for Michigan National Guard members

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz is helping lead the effort to establish a unique skilled trades apprenticeship program tailored specifically for Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard service members.

Under House Bill 5703, which Schmaltz has co-sponsored, training and experience gained during service in the Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard would count toward certain apprenticeship certifications.

“By integrating military experience with civilian apprenticeships, our plan paves the way for career growth and recognition of their skills,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “Establishing a program like this underscores Michigan’s deep appreciation for our service members, ensuring that they have the tools and support they need to thrive both during and after their time in the National Guard.”

House Bill 5703 would create the program and ensure it will be cost-free for service members, allowing them to pursue professional development without financial burden. On-the-job learning will be integrated into duty hours under the direction of the service member’s supervisor.

The plan was referred to the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee for consideration.
