State Rep. Matt Hall this week voted to approve plans promoting fairness and practicality in school sports, protecting life, and ensuring taxpayers are not on the hook for exorbitant and unnecessary expenditures.

As part of the school aid budget, school districts and intermediate school districts must require students to play sports according to their biological sex.

“We want girls to have the opportunity to compete and have a fair chance when they participate in sports,” said Hall, of Comstock Township. “When there is an uneven playing field, as we have seen in certain instances across the country, it can be discouraging and impact athletes as they look to get scholarships or pay off all their hard work with success.

“Sports are immensely important for the development of our kids. They help kids stay fit and socialize. I worry if we don’t offer school districts this clarity now and continue to see the trend of boys participating in girls’ sports increase, it could discourage girls from participating in sports going forward.”

Hall noted abortion providers will be prohibited from receiving state and federal funds within the budget plan. Michigan averages about 27,000 abortions each year, and the number increased in 2020.

“We must do more to defend life, because the statistics we are seeing are staggering,” Hall said. “One of my top priorities is ensuring state and federal taxpayer dollars are not going into funding this practice. It’s simply wrong.”

Another component of the budget plan addresses gender reassignment in Michigan’s prisons. Hall stressed that while the state has a responsibility to provide essential health care to prisoners, Michigan taxpayers do not have a responsibility to fund elective procedures that the majority of health insurance plans would not cover. Under the budget plan Hall voted to approve, the Michigan Department of Corrections would be prohibited from funding gender reassignment for prisoners.

The budget measures now move to the Senate for further consideration.
