LANSING, Mich. — State Rep. Jaime Greene, R-Richmond, is calling attention to the impact of the ongoing federal shutdown on Michigan families who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With federal agencies warning that November benefits may be delayed or reduced, Greene is urging residents across Lapeer, St. Clair, and Macomb counties to take action now — and released a full list of local food and emergency-aid resources to help families stay fed and supported.

“Let’s be clear — no Michigan family should have to go hungry because Washington can’t do its job,” Greene said. “This is what happens when career politicians play power games instead of doing the people’s work. I’m here to fight for the folks who actually keep this country running — working parents, seniors, and veterans who just want to feed their families and pay their bills.”

Greene said her office has been in contact with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), which oversees SNAP benefits in the state. She encouraged residents with questions about their benefits to reach out directly to their local MDHHS office for updates on payment schedules and eligibility.

Her office has also compiled county-by-county food-assistance resources to make sure help is within reach if benefits are interrupted:

In addition, residents can dial 2-1-1 or visit mi211.org for round-the-clock help finding local programs that provide rent, utility, or emergency financial assistance.

“When the federal government shuts down, real people suffer,” Greene said. “I’m not waiting on bureaucrats — I’m working with local churches, food banks, and county programs to make sure no one in our district falls through the cracks.”

Greene also encouraged residents to make their voices heard in Washington by contacting Michigan’s U.S. senators to demand immediate action to reopen the government and restore full funding for food programs.

“Washington needs to remember who they work for — it’s not lobbyists or party bosses, it’s the American people,” Greene said. “If they can’t balance a budget or keep basic programs running, they need to hear directly from the people they’re failing.”

Greene said her office stands ready to help constituents connect with any available state or local aid while the federal stalemate continues.

Constituents can reach her office at (517) 373-1775 or JaimeGreene@house.mi.gov for assistance or to access the full list of local resources.
