Rep. Anette Glenn, R-Midland, is pleading with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to open the offices of the Unemployment Insurance Agency immediately so Michigan workers can speak directly with UIA representatives about the payments they have been promised.

Glenn reported that hundreds of displaced workers in Bay and Midland counites, and across Michigan, have gone without their unemployment insurance payments for more than seven months. The UIA phone service has been overwhelmed, receiving thousands upon thousands of calls from Michigan’s hardworking residents every day since the pandemic started, which makes it frustrating and nearly impossible for many people to even speak with an actual person.

“Families in Midland and Bay counties have gone without income for months, despite promises from the governor that they would be taken care of when she shut down their jobs in March,” Glenn said. “These delays are inexcusable. The governor’s administration has had several months to make necessary improvements to the agency’s operations and ensure Michigan’s displaced workers receive the payments they need and deserve. Businesses across the state have managed to open their doors safely to the public, it’s time for the governor to instruct the UIA to do the same.”

UIA offices closed indefinitely in March and have yet to be reopened fully to the public, despite other state government offices resuming operations across the state. Since then, thousands of claims have gone unanswered by the agency and families across Michigan have struggled to pay their bills and put food on their tables.

Glenn believes UIA offices should find ways to safely open its public offices immediately to better serve the public.
