State Rep. Donni Steele today introduced a resolution to declare January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in the state of Michigan, reaffirming the Legislature’s commitment to confronting modern-day slavery and supporting survivors.

Human trafficking remains a serious and persistent crime in Michigan, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and communities. Traffickers exploit children, women, and men for labor or commercial sex through force, fraud, or coercion, often luring victims with false promises of opportunity before trapping them in abuse.

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, Michigan ranked among the top 10 states for reported trafficking activity in 2023, with 779 identifying signals, 254 cases, and 506 identified victims.

“Human trafficking thrives in silence and shadows,” said Steele (R–Orion Township). “By declaring January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we are shining a light on this horrific crime, honoring survivors, and making it clear that Michigan will not tolerate the exploitation of human beings. Awareness saves lives, and it starts with education and vigilance in our communities.”

The resolution recognizes the tireless efforts of law enforcement, advocacy organizations, Churches, and service providers across Michigan who work to prevent trafficking, prosecute traffickers, and protect survivors. It emphasizes that public awareness and education is one of the most powerful tools in identifying victims and stopping exploitation before it escalates.

The resolution encourages all Michiganders to take part in efforts that promote awareness, prevention, and action against human trafficking.
